…Jesus the Risen King

(The Gospel Project for Kids – Fall 2017 Quarter)

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.”

1 Corinthians 15.3-4

Bible Passage: John 21.1-19

Jesus & PeterWhen Jesus  made breakfast for His disciples by the sea, He wanted them to know that His promise to make them fishers of men was still true…

Jesus also wanted Peter to know that He forgave his fearful denial. Peter had denied Jesus three times. So Jesus asked Peter three times, “Do you love Me?” And Peter confirmed his love for Jesus three times…

Each time that Peter answered that he loved Jesus, Jesus told Peter to watch over His sheep, to feed His lambs and to feed His sheep. Jesus restored Peter to the work of continuing all that Jesus had taught him and the disciples…

Jesus showed Peter and His disciples that He loved and forgave them…

We who know Jesus is the Risen King must tell others that He is the Lord who forgives us and makes things right again.

Jesus is the Risen King because He took up His life again…

To show that He has overcome the corruption of this world…

To show that He has overcome the power of our own Nasty I-SIN heart

To show that He has overcome the power of Satan (Genesis 3.15)…

jesus & thomasOn the day that Jesus rose again from the grave, He appeared to His disciples in the upper room, and He showed them that He is truly alive; He is not a ghost. Thomas was not there at that time…

The disciples told Thomas of Jesus’ living appearance, but Thomas wanted to touch Jesus’ wounds before he would trust their story…

Eight days later, Jesus’ disciples were gathered again, and Thomas was present. Jesus came into the room and told Thomas to touch the wounds in His hands and His side. He told Thomas to stop doubting and to believe…

Jesus helped Thomas to believe His power over death…

We who know Jesus is the Risen King must tell others, and pray God’s help for them to believe…

Bible Passage: Luke 24.13-35

the road to emmausOn the day that Jesus rose again from the grave, He was very busy encouraging His disciples…

Two of Jesus’ disciples were walking along a road on their way to the town of Emmaus. They were disappointed and troubled about how Jesus could be the Messiah of Israel if He was crucified…

While they were walking Jesus joined them in disguise. He listened to their troubled hearts. When they finished telling Him what troubled them, He began to explain to them how all the Scriptures, from Moses and the Prophets spoke of the true identity and work of the crucified Messiah…

When the disciples listened and saw their traveling companion break bread at their table, their eyes were opened and they knew that He is Jesus the Messiah: Risen and Glorified!

Bible Passage: Matthew 28.1-15; Luke 24.6-8; John 10.1-18

Jesus ResurrectionIn a garden long ago, Adam and Eve gave away their life to the power of Satan and to a sinful desire to have their own world…

In the fullness of time, Jesus laid down His life on the cross and was laid in a tomb in a garden on the first day of the Passover festival; His death and burial marked the beginning of seven days of the season of Unleavened Bread. He took up His life again on the third day of the days of Passover/ Unleavened Bread. According to Exodus 13 this third day is the Day of Remembrance of the Firstborn of Israel saved by God from death in Egypt…

The Resurrection of Jesus was more than coming back to life. The Resurrection of Jesus was the sign of His power to take up the glory He laid down to overcome the world, the power of Satan, and the despair of death and hell…

The Spirit of the LORD God is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to…proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God…”

Bible Passage: Matthew 27.11-66

Jesus CrucifiedWhen Jesus gave up His life on the cross, there was a great darkness over the land for three hours–a very long and unusual eclipse of the sun…

When Jesus gave up His life on the cross, a massive earthquake tore the veil in the Temple and opened the graves of many saints who had died…

When the veil of the Temple was torn apart, God was showing that Jesus is the Final Sacrifice for our sins…

When Jesus was crucified on Golgotha, God worked His revenge on Satan for corrupting Adam and Eve and all of us…

Jesus’ death on the cross and the signs in the earth and the heavens which were shown that day, announced to the world that, “Truly this was the Son of God” (Matthew 27.54).

The Spirit of the LORD God is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to…proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God…”

…How shall we escape if we neglect SO GREAT A SALVATION, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,  God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

…Jesus the Anointed One

(The Gospel Project for Kids – Fall 2017 Quarter)

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn…”

Isaiah 61.1-2; (Luke 4.18)

Bible Passage: Matthew 26.26-30; Luke 22.14-30

last passoverIn the Passover supper three loaves of unleavened bread are shared in special order. The middle piece of bread–the second piece–is broken in half. One half is wrapped in a linen cloth and hidden till the supper is finished. Then it is found and bought by the leader of the meal with a coin…

Jesus blessed the broken middle bread and announced that it is His own body…

In the Passover supper four cups of wine are shared for remembering God’s promises. The third cup is the Cup of Redemption…

Jesus blessed the Cup of Redemption and announced that it is the cup of His own blood of the New Covenant, poured out for the remission of sins…

The Cup of Redemption follows the broken bread because our forgiveness has been bought with the  blood of Jesus, the Anointed One…

Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands!  Serve the LORD with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know that the LORD, He is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.  Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His Name. For the LORD is good; His MERCY is everlasting, and His TRUTH endures to all generations.”

–from Psalm 100

Because Jesus was anointed to complete God’s promises in the Passover with His own body and blood, everyday is a day of Thanksgiving for all who believe in Him…

Because Jesus was anointed to give all who believe in Him a meal of remembrance till He returns, let all of us who believe in Him daily feed on Him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Isaiah 61.1-2; (Luke 4.18)

Bible Passage: Matthew 21.12-17; Mark 11.15-19

The House of God was given to the people as a holy place where they could pray to God and learn His Word…

The place of prayer for the people from all the nations was being used for  buying and selling instead of what God meant for that place to be…

Jesus drove out all the people who had brought into that holy place things which never belonged there…

Jesus was anointed by God’s Spirit to make God’s holy presence known in that place…

God anointed Jesus to save His people from their sins and to reign as King over all of God’s creation…

Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body…Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?…Flee sexual immorality…He who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body…Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

–from 1 Corinthians 6.13-20

Jesus was anointed by God to cleanse us from everything which does not belong in us–everything which corrupts the glorious purpose of our created bodies. Jesus was anointed by God to be The Way for all who believe in His atoning work to become and to belong to a redeemed and sanctified house of prayer–a people of prayer, lifting up holy hands, undefiled by the corruption of the world’s hostility to His sovereignty and glory…

If you belong to Christ Jesus, don’t make your living temple a “den of thieves…”

At Jesus’ Feet…

Time is an expensive commodity; and the older one gets, the more precious time becomes. Energy is another expensive commodity; and the older one gets, the more precious energy becomes…

Nowadays, my energies, both physical and mental, seem to come in bursts which are short-lived; I am learning quickly what wastes them and what invests them for something which lasts…

I could be in a ceramics class with my contemporaries, or touring the Highlands of Scotland, or rehearsing with a local chorale or theater group, or volunteering at the local hospital. None of these are wastes in God’s economy; in Christ, all these are ways I could spend my time and energies to advance the Kingdom of God.  But I have not been given that sphere of influence in which to pour out the precious life that remains in my jar of oil…

So here I am at the feet of Jesus, journaling on one of the ways He has given me to worship Him: through the labors of declaring the Kingdom of God to little ones in my church family… for such a time as this…

Bible Passage: Matthew 26.6-13; John 12.1-8

At BethanyMary poured expensive oil on the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair…

While the fragrance of the precious oil filled the whole room, the disciples and dinner guests accused Mary of wasting something that could help the poor…

Jesus corrected them, saying that Mary was right to pour out that oil on His feet…

Mary was worshipping Jesus as the One whom God had anointed–The Christ, The Messiah…

God anointed Jesus to save His people from their sins and to reign as King over all of God’s creation.

Let the word of Messiah Jesus dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Power Over Sickness and Death…

Sharing experiences about my weaknesses is not one of my innate strengths; but I will write a few lines to preface this post…

I am made of clay. My sailing vessel is leaky, and my sails are patched with wild and frantic attempts to mend the tears… I am a lot of work to keep afloat… I sometimes have trouble seeing my compass while I navigate my daily currents on this sea… If anyone is unworthy to be taken by Messiah Jesus to serve in His Kingdom, it is I…

So,  I rely heavily on the Bright and Morning Star–the Lord Jesus–to direct me safely for the purposes of His Kingdom. I keep touching the hem of His garment in my prayers throughout each day’s ventures…

Here is one of my favorite places to lower my sails and weigh my anchor into the depths of the Word of God… His power to heal is precious for one such as me… For my vessel and for my heart…

(THE GOSPEL PROJECT FOR KIDS – SUMMER 2017)

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases…”

Psalm 103.2-3

Bible Passage: Mark 5.21-43; Matthew 9.18-26

canaanite woman & jairus daughter A Jewish man named Jairus was a high official in the Jewish synagogue; he searched out Jesus and begged Him to come and heal his daughter…

On the way, there was a sick woman who was a stranger to the Jews; she lived among people who did not worship the God of Jacob. She searched for Jesus, believing He could heal her sickness; she touched Jesus’ clothing and was healed… And because she believed Jesus, He called her a daughter of the Kingdom; she was no longer a stranger to God…

When Jesus finally arrived at Jairus’ house, his family and friends were weeping and singing sad songs, because his daughter was lying in the sleep of death.  Jesus told her to rise and she rose full of life; she walked and was given a meal to eat…

In the Kingdom of God, there are only those who believe in the Lord Jesus…

The Lord Jesus is the King of LIFE; He alone can heal a heart from its SIN sickness and its “sleep of death.”

Two people needy for the healing power of Jesus… One was a stranger to the Covenant given by God to the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob… The other was a high official, born into the service of the Covenant work given to the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob…  One was the product of a culture bent on establishing its own kingdom of idolatry; the other was an heir to God’s Kingdom promises, yet serving in an environment adversarial to the clear presence of the Kingdom in Messiah Jesus…

When He healed, Jesus showed His extraordinary power as the Messiah…

Which is easier for the Messiah to do: heal a body ravaged with illness and deformity? or to change a human heart from its deadly rebellion to a heart that chooses LIFE? He laid down His own life on the cross and took it back up again to show His power to make people WHOLE in Him–He can heal or strengthen in weakness, as well as to thoroughly overcome the power of SIN and death. When we believe that Jesus is Lord,  His thorough healing power makes us WHOLE  and ALIVE in Him…

I speak as one who knows… Biggest miracle and greatest healing of all…

…A Divine Appointment in the region of Gadara (KJV; NKJV): Mark 5.1-20; Luke 8.26-38; (Genesis 49.19) –see the Bible passage links below…

Gadara-DecapolisThe people of the region of Gad had drifted backward, mingling with and preferring the practices of the religions from which God had rescued their fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Seen in this account is the clear consequence of dabbling in “familiar spirits” and “strange fire;” in so doing, those who have been rescued by the LORD of hosts open themselves to the confusion and chaos and oppression by Satan and his deceiving spirits…

The tribe of Gad was not unique in their syncretism and apostasy, but when Jacob blessed his sons centuries before, he saw that God would visit Gad’s people to declare His supreme authority and His sovereign faithfulness to His purposes…

This troubled and oppressed Gadarene soul was marked for seeing God’s triumph over  the “troop” which “tramped upon him…”

Bible Passage: Mark 5.1-20; Luke 8.26-38; (Genesis 49.19)

gadarene demoniacJesus and His disciples traveled to the region of the Gadarenes (NKJV), a place which once belonged to Jacob’s sons in the tribe of Gad…

“Gad, a troop shall tramp upon him, but he shall triumph at last.” (Genesis 49.19)

Jesus was met by a man–possibly a descendant of Gad–whose soul and body were being tramped upon by a huge troop of angelic bullies–as many as 2,000 of them–known in the Bible as unclean spirits, and also Satan’s band of hateful angels…

On this day, after many hundreds of years of mixing idols with worship of God, the people of that region saw the power and authority of Jesus to declare and show the Kingdom of God by His own command…

These angelic bullies are “about Satan’s business;” they still try to attack our souls and bodies, and will try even harder before Jesus returns…

The Lord Jesus is “about His Father’s business.” He alone has the power and authority over all the angelic bullies.

If I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has come to you.”

–Matthew 12.28

Centuries of idolatry and syncretism and mingling of the cultures, and still God knows how to sort and target and fulfill. Yes, I said “target” because His desire is never unfulfilled…

It takes my breath away…
